Niagara, ON – On January 27, 2025, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) intercepted a human smuggling attempt at the Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge border crossing.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., CBSA officers observed a vehicle approaching the border from the United States. The vehicle was occupied by four individuals, including a driver and three passengers.
During primary inspection, CBSA officers noted inconsistencies in the driver’s and passengers’ travel documents and behavior. Upon further examination, officers discovered that the driver and one of the passengers were citizens of Mexico who had overstayed their visas. The remaining two passengers were identified as Canadian citizens.
CBSA officers, with the assistance of the RCMP, detained the four individuals for further investigation. A search of the vehicle revealed that one of the Canadian passengers was concealing a hidden compartment in their luggage, which contained multiple passports and other fraudulent documents.
The driver and the Mexican passenger were arrested by the RCMP for overstaying their visas and suspicion of human smuggling. The Canadian passengers were released after questioning.
“This is a significant interception by our officers,” said Scott Vanderkamp, Regional Director General of the CBSA’s Southern Ontario Region. “Human smuggling is a serious crime that puts the lives of vulnerable individuals at risk. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to combat this illegal activity.”
“The RCMP is committed to working with the CBSA and other law enforcement agencies to protect the integrity of our borders,” said Superintendent Tony Park, Officer in Charge of the Niagara Regional Police Service. “We will continue to investigate these types of incidents and hold those responsible accountable.”
The investigation is ongoing.
