“Today, we acknowledge the release of Justice Bastarache’s final report, the culmination of a two-year inquiry into foreign interference in Canada’s democratic processes. The Canadian government worked to ensure the Inquiry had all the necessary resources and support to conduct its work in a thorough and independent manner.
The Inquiry’s findings and recommendations will inform the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen our democracy and safeguard the integrity of our electoral system. We are grateful to Justice Bastarache and his dedicated team for their unwavering commitment to this important work.
The Inquiry found that foreign interference in Canada’s electoral processes and democratic institutions is a real and serious threat. It identified instances where foreign states have attempted to undermine our democratic institutions and influence our elections. The Inquiry provided 45 recommendations to address foreign interference. These recommendations cover a wide range of areas, including:
