Minister MacAulay announces funding to help farmers lower emissions and build resilience

January 28, 2025

Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, today announced an investment of $163.7 million over five years to support farmers in adopting beneficial management practices that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and build resilience to climate change.

“Our government is committed to supporting farmers in their efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change,” said Minister MacAulay. “This investment will help farmers adopt innovative practices that will benefit both their bottom line and the environment.”

The funding will be used to support a range of projects, including:

  • Precision agriculture: This involves using technology to collect data on soil conditions, crop health, and other factors, which can then be used to make more informed decisions about fertilizer and pesticide use, irrigation, and other management practices. This can help farmers reduce their GHG emissions and improve their yields.
  • Cover cropping: This involves planting a crop that is not intended for harvest, but rather to cover the soil and protect it from erosion. Cover crops can also help to improve soil health and reduce GHG emissions.
  • Nutrient management: This involves managing the application of fertilizers to crops in a way that minimizes nutrient losses to the environment. This can help to reduce GHG emissions and improve water quality.
  • Livestock management: This involves managing livestock in a way that reduces GHG emissions. This can include measures such as using more efficient feed rations, improving manure management, and reducing the number of animals in a herd.

The funding will be administered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) through its Agricultural Climate Solutions (ACS) program. The ACS program provides financial assistance to farmers and other agricultural stakeholders to adopt beneficial management practices that reduce GHG emissions and build resilience to climate change.

“This investment is a significant step forward in our efforts to reduce GHG emissions from agriculture and build a more sustainable food system,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “Agriculture is a key part of our economy, and we need to work together to ensure that it is sustainable for future generations.”

The Government of Canada is committed to working with farmers and other stakeholders to reduce GHG emissions from agriculture and build a more sustainable food system. This investment is a key part of that commitment.
