Delivering stable public transit funding to the City of Mississauga
Mississauga, ON – The Government of Canada is delivering stable public transit funding to the City of Mississauga, ensuring residents have access to reliable and affordable transportation options.
Today, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport, and Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Malton, announced $405.7 million over the next five years, through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), to the City of Mississauga for the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
The Hurontario LRT is a 18-kilometre light rail line that will connect Mississauga’s Gateway Terminal to the Brampton Gateway Terminal, providing faster and more reliable transit service to residents and businesses in both cities. The project is expected to increase transit ridership by 27%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17,000 tonnes annually, and create approximately 1,300 jobs during construction.
“Public transit is essential to the success of our communities,” said Minister Alghabra. “This investment will help the City of Mississauga meet the growing demand for public transit services, reduce traffic congestion, and connect residents to jobs, education, and essential services.”
“This is great news for Mississauga and the entire region,” said MP Khalid. “The Hurontario LRT will provide much-needed public transit options and help reduce traffic congestion in our growing city. I am proud that our government is making this investment in Mississauga’s future.”
“We are grateful for the federal government’s continued support for Mississauga’s priority transit projects,” said Bonnie Crombie, Mayor of Mississauga. “This funding will allow us to move forward with the Hurontario LRT, which will transform transit in Mississauga and create a more sustainable and connected city for our residents.”
The Government of Canada is committed to investing in public transit infrastructure that meets the needs of growing communities. Since 2015, the Government of Canada has invested more than $14 billion in public transit projects across Canada, including over $1.5 billion in Mississauga.
