Co-chairs to provide opening remarks at third annual National Indigenous-Federal-Provincial-Territorial Meeting on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ People
OTTAWA, ON (January 28, 2025) – Today, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) announced that the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, and Chief Bobby Cameron, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), will provide opening remarks at the third annual National Indigenous-Federal-Provincial-Territorial Meeting on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ People.
The meeting will take place from January 30 to February 1, 2025, in Gatineau, Quebec.
The meeting will bring together Indigenous leaders, federal, provincial, and territorial ministers, and other stakeholders to discuss progress on the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ People.
The NAP was developed in response to the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, which found that Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people are disproportionately affected by violence.
The NAP includes 180 concrete actions that all levels of government and Indigenous communities can take to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people.
The third annual meeting will provide an opportunity to review the progress that has been made on the implementation of the NAP, and to identify areas where more work is needed.
The meeting will also focus on the importance of working together to address the root causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people, such as poverty, racism, and colonialism.
“The National Action Plan is a critical tool in our efforts to end the violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people,” said Minister Miller. “This third annual meeting will provide an opportunity to take stock of our progress and to identify areas where we need to do more.”
“The National Action Plan is a roadmap to a better future for Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people,” said Chief Cameron. “This third annual meeting is an important opportunity to hold governments accountable for their commitments and to ensure that the NAP is fully implemented.”
The meeting will be open to the media.
