New York – The UN Security Council on Friday called for “urgent and coordinated international action” to address the escalating crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following a briefing by senior UN officials.
The Council met behind closed doors to discuss the deteriorating security situation in North Kivu province, where the M23 rebel group has seized control of several towns, including the provincial capital, Goma.
“The members of the Security Council expressed deep concern at the deteriorating security situation in eastern DRC and condemned the continued offensive by the M23 rebel group,” said a statement issued by the Council after the meeting.
“The members of the Security Council called for urgent and coordinated international action to address the crisis, including support for the Government of the DRC and regional efforts to stabilize the situation,” the statement said.
The Council also called on the M23 to “immediately cease all hostilities and withdraw from the areas it has occupied.”
The briefing to the Council was given by Bintou Keita, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the DRC and Head of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), and Hervé Ladsous, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.
Keita told the Council that the M23 offensive had “created a humanitarian crisis,” with over 100,000 people displaced from their homes. She also said that MONUSCO was “doing everything it can to protect civilians and support the Government of the DRC.”
Ladsous said that MONUSCO was “overstretched” and that it needed “additional resources and support” to effectively respond to the crisis. He also called on the international community to “provide financial and logistical support” to MONUSCO.
The Security Council is expected to meet again on the DRC crisis in the coming days.
