Last call! Penalised for having the wrong ticket? Tell us about it

27 January 2025

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is appealing for people to tell it about their experiences if they’ve ever been penalised for having the wrong ticket.

It comes as the consumer watchdog ramps up its scrutiny of the way train companies handle these cases.

ORR wants to hear from passengers who have faced fines or other penalties because they:

  • Bought the wrong type of ticket
  • Didn’t have a valid ticket
  • Didn’t have the right ticket for the class of carriage they were travelling in
  • Made an innocent mistake about the fare

ORR wants to know about the circumstances of the incident, how it was handled by the train company, and whether the passenger felt they were treated fairly.

ORR’s investigation into how train companies handle ticketing and penalty fares is ongoing, and this information will help inform its findings.

Anthony Smith, ORR’s Director of Consumer Affairs, said: “We want to hear from anyone who has been penalised for having the wrong ticket, whether you think you were treated fairly or not.

“Your experiences will help us to build a better picture of how train companies are handling these cases, and to ensure that passengers are treated fairly.”

To share your experience, please contact ORR by email at [email protected] or by post to:

Office of Rail and Road Floor 3 One Kemble Street London WC2B 4AN

Please include your name, contact details, and a brief description of your experience. ORR will treat all responses in confidence.
