OTTAWA, Ontario – Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, issued the following statement:
“On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million Jews and millions of other victims who were systematically murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Holocaust. We also honour the survivors who endured unspeakable horrors and whose testimonies continue to serve as a powerful reminder of the fragility of human rights.
“The Holocaust was a genocide that targeted an entire people, solely because of their religious affiliation. It was a crime against humanity that left an indelible mark on our world. Today, we recommit ourselves to combating antisemitism and all forms of hatred and intolerance.
“We are deeply concerned by the resurgence of antisemitism around the world. In recent years, we have witnessed an increase in hate crimes and acts of violence targeting Jewish communities. This is unacceptable. We must never allow hatred and intolerance to go unchallenged.
“Canada stands in solidarity with Jewish communities around the world. We will continue to work with our partners to promote tolerance and respect for all.
“On this day, we also remember the Righteous Among the Nations, who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Their courage and compassion serve as an inspiration to us all.
“As we honour the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, let us pledge to never forget the lessons learned from this dark chapter in human history. Let us work together to build a more just and equitable world for all.”
