The Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of Health, today welcomed the release of the final report from the Structured Intervention Unit (SIU) Implementation Advisory Panel. The panel was established in 2023 to provide advice on the implementation of SIUs, which are specialized units within hospitals that provide intensive support to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
“Our government is committed to improving access to mental health services, and the implementation of Structured Intervention Units is a key part of that commitment,” said Minister McGuinty. “This report provides valuable recommendations on how to best implement SIUs in Ontario, and I look forward to working with our partners to ensure that these units are available to those who need them.”
The panel’s report includes 22 recommendations on various aspects of SIU implementation, including:
- The development of a provincial SIU implementation plan
- The establishment of a central coordinating body to oversee SIU implementation
- The development of standardized training and quality assurance measures for SIUs
- The provision of funding for SIU implementation and ongoing operations
The panel also recommended that SIUs be implemented in a phased approach, with the first units being established in areas with the greatest need.
The Ministry of Health will now work with its partners to develop an implementation plan based on the panel’s recommendations. The ministry is committed to working with hospitals and other stakeholders to ensure that SIUs are implemented in a way that meets the needs of individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
