Press Release: Presidium of the Bundestag stands before the words “#WeRemember”
Berlin, January 24, 2025 – On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Presidium of the Bundestag came together in front of the words “#WeRemember” in the foyer of the parliament building. Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, Vice Presidents Yvonne Magwas, Wolfgang Kubicki, Katrin Göring-Eckardt and Aydan Özoğuz, as well as Bundestag Directors Michael Hagedorn and Michael Grüne, stood in silence to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
In her speech, Bundestag President Bas emphasized the importance of remembering the horrors of the Nazi era and keeping the memory alive. “We have a responsibility to ensure that such atrocities never happen again,” she said. “We must stand up to hatred, racism and anti-Semitism wherever they occur.”
Vice President Kubicki added that the fight against anti-Semitism is a permanent task for democracy. “We must not let the poison of hatred and discrimination spread,” he said. “We must protect our Jewish fellow citizens and ensure that they can live in safety and freedom in Germany.”
In the afternoon, the Bundestag will commemorate the victims of National Socialism with a special session. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will give a speech, and there will be contributions from survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants.
