Department of Finance Canada Officials Host Second Briefing with Industry Stakeholders on the Canada-U.S. Economic Relationship
(OTTAWA, ONTARIO, January 24, 2025) – Today, senior officials from the Department of Finance Canada hosted a virtual briefing with industry stakeholders to discuss the Canada-U.S. economic relationship and the implications for Canadian businesses. This was the second in a series of briefings that the Department of Finance is conducting with businesses across the country.
The briefing was led by Maria Barrados, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Paul Rochon, Associate Deputy Minister of Finance. They provided an overview of the current state of the Canada-U.S. economic relationship and discussed the potential impacts of recent developments, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing negotiations on the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Barrados and Rochon also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in strengthening the Canada-U.S. economic relationship. They encouraged industry stakeholders to share their perspectives and insights on how the government can best support Canadian businesses in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the current economic landscape.
“The Canada-U.S. economic relationship is one of the most important in the world, and we are committed to working with our industry partners to ensure that it continues to benefit both countries,” said Barrados. “We value the input of the private sector, and these briefings are an important way for us to hear directly from businesses about the challenges and opportunities they are facing.”
The first briefing in this series was held on January 19, 2025, and focused on the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for the Canada-U.S. economic relationship. The upcoming briefings will address a variety of topics, including trade, investment, and innovation.
The Department of Finance is committed to engaging with industry stakeholders on a regular basis to ensure that the government’s economic policies are informed by the perspectives of the private sector. These briefings are an important part of that ongoing engagement.
