Switzerland and Ukraine Launch Private Sector Partnership for Reconstruction
January 23, 2025
Bern, Switzerland – The Swiss Confederation and the Government of Ukraine today announced the launch of a new public-private partnership (PPP) focused on supporting the reconstruction of Ukraine.
The PPP, known as “Rebuild Ukraine,” brings together over 30 leading Swiss private companies, including Nestlé, Novartis, and Credit Suisse, with Ukrainian government officials and representatives from the international community.
The partnership will focus on four key areas:
- Infrastructure: Rebuilding and modernizing Ukraine’s transportation, energy, and water systems.
- Business Development: Supporting the growth of Ukrainian businesses and creating new jobs.
- Education and Healthcare: Improving access to quality education and healthcare for the Ukrainian people.
- Sustainability: Ensuring that reconstruction efforts are environmentally friendly and sustainable.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward in our efforts to support Ukraine’s recovery,” said Ignazio Cassis, President of the Swiss Confederation. “By working together with the private sector, we can leverage their expertise and resources to make a real difference in Ukraine.”
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal expressed gratitude for the support from Switzerland and the private sector. “This partnership will be essential in helping us rebuild our country and create a better future for our people,” he said.
The Rebuild Ukraine PPP will be managed by a Joint Steering Committee composed of representatives from the Swiss and Ukrainian governments, as well as the private sector. The committee will oversee the implementation of projects and ensure that they align with Ukraine’s reconstruction priorities.
“We are committed to supporting Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction,” said Markus Bucher, CEO of Swiss Re, one of the companies involved in the partnership. “This partnership is a unique opportunity for the private sector to contribute to the rebuilding of a peaceful and prosperous Ukraine.”
The Swiss government has pledged CHF 100 million (approximately $107.5 million) to support the partnership, which is expected to mobilize a total of CHF 1 billion (approximately $1.075 billion) in private sector investment.
The launch of the Rebuild Ukraine PPP was welcomed by the international community, including the United Nations and the European Union. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said, “This partnership is a testament to the strong support for Ukraine’s reconstruction within the international community.”
