Canada Invests in Climate Change Adaptation to Keep Communities Safe in Southern Ontario and Across Canada

January 23, 2025

Today, the Government of Canada announced a significant investment of $1.5 billion to strengthen climate change adaptation and resilience measures across the country. This funding will support projects in Southern Ontario and other vulnerable regions to help communities prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

“Canadians are already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change, from extreme heat waves to floods and wildfires,” said the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “This investment will help communities across the country build resilience and adapt to these challenges, keeping our citizens safe and our economy strong.”

In Southern Ontario, the funding will support several projects, including:

  • Upgrading flood control infrastructure in the Grand River watershed to protect communities from flooding
  • Building a new stormwater management system in the City of Toronto to reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall events
  • Planting trees and restoring wetlands to create natural buffers against extreme heat and flooding

“Climate change is a real and present threat to our communities,” said the Honourable John Wilkinson, MPP for Perth-Wellington. “This investment will help us take action to protect our homes, businesses, and infrastructure from the impacts of climate change.”

In addition to the projects in Southern Ontario, the funding will also support climate change adaptation initiatives in other vulnerable regions across Canada, including:

  • Building seawalls and other coastal protection measures to protect coastal communities from rising sea levels in Atlantic Canada
  • Developing drought-resistant crops and improving irrigation systems to support farmers in the Prairies
  • Investing in research and development to improve our understanding of climate change impacts and develop new adaptation technologies

“This investment is a critical step towards building a more resilient Canada,” said Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Chief Scientist at The Nature Conservancy. “By investing in climate change adaptation, we can reduce the risks to our communities and economy, and create a more sustainable future for all Canadians.”

The funding announced today is part of the Government of Canada’s $3 billion Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan, which was announced in Budget 2023. This plan includes investments in infrastructure, research, and community-based initiatives to help Canada adapt to the impacts of climate change.

“Climate change is a global challenge, but it is one that we must face together,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “This investment will help us build a more resilient Canada, where our communities are safe and our economy is strong.”
