Katie Pettifer appointed as Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency
22 January 2025
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Katie Pettifer as its new Chief Executive. Katie will take up the post on 1 April 2025, succeeding Emily Miles CBE who is stepping down after seven years in the role.
Katie is a highly experienced leader with a proven track record in food safety and public health. She joins the FSA from the Food Standards Scotland (FSS), where she was Chief Executive for four years. Prior to that, she held senior roles at the Department of Health and Social Care and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States.
Katie said:
“I am delighted to be appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency. This is a critical role in ensuring that the UK has a safe and nutritious food supply. I look forward to working with the team at the FSA to continue to deliver on this important mission.”
FSA Chair, Heather Hancock, said:
“I am very pleased to welcome Katie to the FSA. She has a wealth of experience in food safety and public health, and I am confident that she will lead the Agency with distinction. I would also like to thank Emily Miles for her exceptional service to the FSA. She has been an outstanding Chief Executive, and I wish her all the best for the future.”
Katie’s appointment comes at a time when the FSA is facing a number of challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit, and the increasing complexity of the food supply chain. The FSA is also working to implement a number of new initiatives, such as the National Food Strategy and the Food Standards (Amendment) Bill.
Katie said:
“I am excited to join the FSA at this challenging and important time. I believe that my experience and skills will enable me to make a significant contribution to the Agency’s work. I look forward to working with the FSA team, stakeholders, and the public to ensure that the UK has a safe and nutritious food supply.”
