Jon Carabello is a NASA astronaut and the first person of Puerto Rican descent to be selected for the Artemis program. He is currently training to be part of the first crewed mission to the Moon in over 50 years.
Carabello was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and raised in Orlando, Florida. He earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in astronautical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Before joining NASA, Carabello worked as a spacecraft systems engineer at Lockheed Martin. He was responsible for developing and testing the guidance, navigation, and control systems for the Orion spacecraft, which will be used to transport astronauts to the Moon.
Carabello was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2017. He has since completed two years of training, including survival training in the Arctic and underwater training in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory.
Carabello is scheduled to fly on the Artemis III mission, which will be the first crewed mission to the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. He will be a member of the crew that will land on the lunar surface and collect samples of lunar rock and soil.
Carabello is excited to be part of the Artemis program and to help NASA return humans to the Moon. He believes that the Artemis program is a critical step in our journey to Mars and beyond.
