Norfolk farmer fined for taking water during summer drought
A Norfolk farmer has been fined for taking water from a river during last summer’s drought.
Robert Ward, 63, of Hall Farm, North Tuddenham, was ordered to pay £2,000 in fines and costs at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Friday (January 13).
The court heard that Ward had taken water from the River Wensum on several occasions between July and September 2022, despite there being a hosepipe ban in place.
The Environment Agency said that Ward had taken the water without a licence and had caused damage to the river.
In mitigation, Ward’s solicitor said that he had taken the water to irrigate his crops and had not realised that he needed a licence.
The court was told that Ward had since obtained a licence and had taken steps to reduce his water usage.
District Judge Peter Veits said that Ward had committed a “serious offence” but that he had taken steps to address the issue.
He said: “You took water from the river without a licence and you did so during a period of drought. This was a serious offence.
“However, I accept that you have taken steps to address the issue and that you have obtained a licence. I am therefore going to impose a fine of £2,000.”
The Environment Agency said that it was “pleased” with the outcome of the case.
A spokesman said: “We are pleased that the court has recognised the seriousness of this offence.
“Water is a precious resource and it is important that everyone uses it responsibly. We will continue to take action against those who abuse our water resources.”
