New York, 17 January 2025 – The Security Council today was warned of the security and political challenges facing the United Nations peacekeeping operations in Lebanon and Syria, and urged to extend their mandates for another year to help maintain stability in the region.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, told the Council that the situation in Lebanon remained “fragile and complex”, with the country facing a number of security and political challenges.

She pointed to the recent increase in terrorist attacks in the country, as well as the ongoing political crisis, which has left Lebanon without a president for over a year.

“These challenges are having a significant impact on the stability of Lebanon and the region,” she said. “The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, plays a critical role in helping to maintain stability and prevent further violence.”

She said that UNIFIL’s mandate, which is due to expire on 31 August 2025, should be extended for another year to allow the mission to continue its work.

The Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, also briefed the Council on the situation in that country, which has been ravaged by a civil war for over a decade.

He said that the war had caused a “humanitarian catastrophe”, with millions of people displaced and in need of assistance.

He also pointed to the ongoing political crisis in Syria, which has made it difficult to find a solution to the conflict.

“The United Nations peacekeeping force in Syria, UNDOF, plays a critical role in helping to maintain stability and prevent further violence,” he said. “UNDOF’s mandate, which is due to expire on 30 June 2025, should be extended for another year to allow the mission to continue its work.”

The Security Council is expected to vote on a resolution to extend the mandates of UNIFIL and UNDOF later this month.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council expressed its concern about the challenges facing Lebanon and Syria, and urged all parties to work together to find a solution to the conflicts.

The Council also reiterated its support for the work of UNIFIL and UNDOF, and called for their mandates to be extended for another year.
