In Lebanon, Guterres highlights challenges and support for peacekeepers
17 January 2025
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visited Lebanon on Monday, where he met with senior government officials and members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
During his visit, the Secretary-General highlighted the challenges facing UNIFIL and the importance of the mission’s work in maintaining peace and security in southern Lebanon. He also expressed his support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Government of Lebanon in their efforts to maintain stability in the country.
“UNIFIL has a critical role to play in helping to maintain peace and security in southern Lebanon,” said the Secretary-General. “The mission’s work is essential to the stability of the region and to the well-being of the Lebanese people.”
The Secretary-General also met with representatives of the local population and heard their concerns about the situation in southern Lebanon. He expressed his solidarity with the people of Lebanon and pledged the United Nations’ continued support for the country.
UNIFIL was established in 1978 to help restore peace and security to southern Lebanon following the Israeli invasion of the country. The mission has been extended several times since then and currently has a mandate to assist the Government of Lebanon in maintaining security in the area, to help ensure that the area is not used for hostile activities, and to provide humanitarian assistance to the civilian population.
UNIFIL is currently composed of approximately 10,000 military personnel from 40 countries. The mission is headquartered in Naqoura, Lebanon.
The Secretary-General’s visit to Lebanon comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region. In recent months, there have been several incidents of violence along the border between Lebanon and Israel. The Secretary-General called on all parties to exercise restraint and to avoid any actions that could escalate the situation.
“It is more important than ever for all parties to work together to maintain peace and security in southern Lebanon,” said the Secretary-General. “UNIFIL has a vital role to play in this regard and I urge all parties to cooperate with the mission.”
