Canada Invests in Climate Change Adaptation to Keep Atlantic Canada Communities Safe

January 17, 2025, 8:21 PM

Ottawa, ON – The Government of Canada today announced a \$200 million investment to support climate change adaptation measures in Atlantic Canada. This funding will help communities prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, extreme weather events, and coastal erosion.

“Climate change is a serious threat to our communities and our way of life,” said the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault. “This investment will help Atlantic Canadians protect their homes, businesses, and infrastructure from the impacts of climate change.”

The funding will be used to support a range of climate change adaptation measures, including:

  • Building and upgrading coastal infrastructure, such as seawalls and breakwaters
  • Restoring and protecting natural ecosystems, such as wetlands and forests
  • Developing and implementing emergency response plans
  • Raising awareness of climate change risks and adaptation measures

“This investment is a down payment on our commitment to protecting Atlantic Canadians from the impacts of climate change,” said the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Dominic LeBlanc. “Working together with our provincial and municipal partners, we will ensure that our communities are resilient to the challenges of a changing climate.”

The Government of Canada is also working with the provinces and territories to develop a national adaptation strategy. The strategy will set out a framework for coordinating and supporting climate change adaptation efforts across the country.

“Climate change is a global challenge, but its impacts are felt locally,” said the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. “This investment will help Atlantic Canadians protect their communities and build a more sustainable future.”
