FBI and Partners Ask Public to Report Information on Ballot Box Fires

FBI.gov (January 16, 2025) – The FBI, in coordination with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and state and local law enforcement, is asking the public to report any information related to ballot box fires or attempted fires.

Since the 2020 election, there have been several incidents of ballot boxes being set on fire or attempts to set them on fire. These acts are considered federal crimes and could undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

“We are committed to protecting the integrity of our elections and ensuring that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots safely and securely,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray. “We urge anyone with information about these incidents to come forward and report it to us.”

The FBI is asking anyone with information about ballot box fires or attempted fires to contact their local FBI field office or the FBI’s toll-free tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). Tips can also be submitted online at tips.fbi.gov.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for a ballot box fire or attempted fire.

The FBI is also working with CISA, USPIS, and state and local law enforcement to investigate these incidents and identify those responsible.

“These acts are a threat to our democracy and will not be tolerated,” said CISA Director Jen Easterly. “We are committed to working with our partners to identify and bring to justice those responsible.”

“The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is committed to protecting the integrity of the mail, including ballots,” said USPIS Inspector in Charge Rafael Nuñez. “We will investigate any attempt to interfere with the delivery or security of ballots and will work with our law enforcement partners to bring those responsible to justice.”
