UN stands with Ukrainians for the long-term, insists UN aid chief
GENEVA (16 January 2023) – The United Nations stands with the people of Ukraine for the long term and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance as long as it takes, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said on Monday.
“We will continue to provide food, shelter, protection, and other life-saving assistance to the millions of Ukrainians who have been affected by this war,” he stressed.
Mr. Griffiths concluded a four-day visit to Ukraine at a time when the country is approaching the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion on 24 February.
“I met with people who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. They are resilient, but they are also exhausted and traumatized. Their stories are heart-wrenching,” he said.
The UN aid chief visited Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel, towns on the outskirts of Kyiv that were heavily damaged in the early days of the war. He also met with internally displaced people in Lviv, in western Ukraine.
This week, the UN and its partners launched a $5.6 billion appeal for Ukraine for 2023, the largest ever humanitarian appeal for a single country.
“The money will provide food, water, shelter, healthcare, and other essential services to millions of people,” Mr. Griffiths said. “It is critical that we receive the funding we need to continue our life-saving work.”
The UN is also working to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian assistance across Ukraine.
“We are working with the government of Ukraine, local authorities, and other humanitarian organizations to ensure that aid is getting to the people who need it most,” Mr. Griffiths said.
“The UN stands with the people of Ukraine. We will continue to provide humanitarian assistance for as long as it takes.”
