Government of Canada backs decarbonization initiative to aid Saskatchewan businesses
Ottawa, ON – 2025-01-16 – The Government of Canada declared today its support for a decarbonization initiative intended to aid Saskatchewan businesses in lowering their greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a clean energy future.
The $20 million “Saskatchewan Decarbonization Initiative” will assist businesses in the province in adopting cutting-edge technologies and tactics to reduce their carbon footprint. The initiative is supported by Emissions Reduction Alberta, a similar program in Alberta, and will be carried out by the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC).
“Our government is dedicated to collaborating with provinces and companies to create a cleaner, more prosperous economy,” stated the Honorable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources. The “Saskatchewan Decarbonization Initiative” will assist Saskatchewan businesses in embracing new technologies and practices to reduce their emissions, boosting their competitiveness and creating jobs.
The initiative will concentrate on three main areas of assistance:
- Technical assistance: Businesses will get specialized knowledge and assistance in identifying and putting into practice decarbonization options.
- Financial assistance: To aid in project implementation costs, companies will have access to low-interest loans and grants.
- Collaboration and networking: The initiative will foster links between companies, researchers, and government officials to share best practices and accelerate decarbonization efforts.
The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) will manage the initiative, which will last for five years. The SRC has a successful track record of collaborating with businesses to promote innovation and economic development.
“We are happy to collaborate with the Government of Canada on this critical endeavor,” said SRC President and CEO Dr. Laurier Schramm. Our work will assist Saskatchewan companies in seizing the economic and environmental benefits of decarbonization and in establishing the province as a center for clean energy.
The Saskatchewan government applauded the initiative and praised its capacity to aid businesses in the province in achieving their decarbonization goals.
“We are appreciative of the Government of Canada’s support for this significant initiative,” stated Jeremy Harrison, Saskatchewan’s Minister of Energy and Resources. It will be crucial in assisting our companies in lowering their emissions, improving their competitiveness, and assisting Saskatchewan in reaching its climate goals.
The “Saskatchewan Decarbonization Initiative” is a component of the government’s larger goal of lowering emissions by 40-45% below 2005 levels by 2030. To encourage the transition to a clean energy future, the government is collaborating with provinces, territories, Indigenous communities, and enterprises.
