Experts demand bridging support for biogas plants
Berlin, 15.01.2025 – The German Biogas Association (DVBB), together with the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg (ifeu), has called for bridging support for biogas plants. A study published by the organisations shows that the current funding situation under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is not sufficient to secure the continued operation of many biogas plants beyond 2025.
The EEG subsidises the production of electricity from renewable sources. However, the subsidies for biogas plants will expire in 2025. This will lead to a significant loss of revenue for many operators, who will then no longer be able to operate their plants profitably.
The study by DVBB and ifeu shows that around 50% of the biogas plants in Germany are at risk of closure after 2025. This would result in a loss of around 3 GW of renewable electricity generation capacity.
The experts are demanding that the federal government introduce bridging support for biogas plants. This support should cover the period from 2025 to 2030 and should be designed to ensure that biogas plants can continue to operate profitably.
The DVBB and ifeu emphasise that biogas plants make an important contribution to the energy transition. They generate renewable electricity, heat and biomethane, which can be used as a fuel for vehicles or to produce electricity. In addition, biogas plants contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and the improvement of air quality.
The experts are confident that biogas plants can continue to play an important role in the energy transition. However, they point out that bridging support is essential to ensure that biogas plants can continue to operate after 2025.
