A Banger Films/NFB Co-Production: “Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story” To Make Its French Premiere at FIPADOC 2025

Montreal, January 14, 2025 – The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is pleased to announce that the Banger Films/NFB co-production Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story by Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee will make its French premiere at FIPADOC 2025, the 34th edition of the International Documentary Festival in Biarritz, France, which will be held from January 22 to 26, 2025.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story is a feature-length documentary that explores the life and music of Jackie Shane, an enigmatic soul and Rhythm & Blues singer who emerged from the vibrant music scene of Toronto in the early 1960s. The film is a personal and intimate portrait of a groundbreaking artist whose career was tragically cut short by societal pressures and personal struggles.

Through rare archival footage, interviews with Shane’s friends and family, and evocative musical performances, the film sheds light on Shane’s enduring impact on music and popular culture. Any Other Way also examines the social and cultural forces that shaped her life and career, including the complexities of race, gender, and sexual orientation in the 1960s.

The film’s directors, Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee, are both acclaimed filmmakers with a deep passion for music and social justice. Mabbott’s previous work includes the feature-length documentary The Last Waltz: Relighting the Flame and the short documentary Black and Blues. Rosenberg-Lee is known for her work on the documentary series Hip-Hop Evolution and the feature-length documentary The Education of Auma Obama.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story has received widespread critical acclaim since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. The film won the Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature Documentary at Hot Docs 2024 and was nominated for Best Music Documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards.

“We are thrilled that Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story will make its French premiere at FIPADOC,” said Annette Clarke, Senior Producer at the NFB’s English Program. “Jackie Shane was a fearless artist who broke down barriers and paved the way for generations of musicians. This film is a powerful testament to her talent and indomitable spirit.”

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story will be screened at FIPADOC on January 23, 2025, at 8:30 pm at the Gare du Midi.
