Prime Minister sets out blueprint to turbocharge AI

13 January 2025

The Prime Minister has today set out a blueprint to turbocharge the UK’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector, making the country a global leader in the development and use of AI.

The National AI Strategy, published today, sets out a vision for the UK to become a global hub for AI innovation and a leader in the ethical development and use of AI. It includes a range of measures to support the growth of the AI sector, including:

  • £1 billion investment in AI research and development
  • New AI standards and regulations to ensure the safe and ethical development and use of AI
  • Support for businesses to adopt and use AI
  • A new National AI Institute to coordinate AI research and development in the UK

The Prime Minister said:

“AI has the potential to transform our lives and our economy. It can help us solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, from climate change to healthcare.

“But we need to make sure that AI is developed and used in a responsible and ethical way. That’s why we’re setting out a blueprint for the UK to become a global leader in AI, with a clear focus on safety, ethics and innovation.”

The National AI Strategy sets out four key pillars for the UK’s AI sector:

  • Investment: The government will invest £1 billion in AI research and development over the next 5 years. This will support the development of new AI technologies and applications, and help to attract and retain the best AI talent in the world.
  • Standards and regulation: The government will develop new AI standards and regulations to ensure the safe and ethical development and use of AI. These standards and regulations will cover issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the use of AI in critical infrastructure.
  • Adoption: The government will support businesses to adopt and use AI. This will include providing funding for businesses to invest in AI technologies and applications, and developing training and support programs to help businesses use AI effectively.
  • Collaboration: The government will work with industry, academia and the public sector to coordinate AI research and development in the UK. A new National AI Institute will be established to bring together AI researchers and developers from across the country.

The National AI Strategy is a comprehensive plan to make the UK a global leader in AI. It sets out a clear vision for the future of AI in the UK, and includes a range of measures to support the growth of the AI sector. The strategy will help to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of the AI revolution, and that AI is used to benefit everyone in society.
