Statement from the Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister
Ottawa, January 13, 2025 – Today, the Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister issued the following statement:
“In recent weeks, there have been increasing concerns raised about foreign interference in Canadian affairs. The Government of Canada takes these concerns very seriously.
We are aware that foreign actors have been attempting to interfere in our democratic processes, including our elections. We are also aware that foreign actors have been seeking to influence public opinion in Canada, often through the spread of disinformation and misinformation.
The Government of Canada is committed to protecting our democracy from foreign interference. We are taking a number of steps to address this issue, including:
- Strengthening our laws and regulations to prevent foreign interference
- Increasing our intelligence and security capabilities to detect and disrupt foreign interference
- Working with our allies and partners to combat foreign interference
We are confident that we can protect our democracy from foreign interference. We will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure that our elections are free and fair, and that our public opinion is not manipulated by foreign actors.
We encourage all Canadians to be vigilant about foreign interference. If you see or hear anything that you believe may be foreign interference, please report it to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
Together, we can protect our democracy and ensure that Canada remains a free and independent country.”
