DPR Korea’s nuclear quest thwarts disarmament efforts, Security Council hears
8 January 2025
New York – Efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons have been significantly hampered by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) continued pursuit of its nuclear program, the United Nations Security Council heard today.
Briefing the Council, Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu said that the DPRK’s nuclear and ballistic missile tests in 2022 marked a serious escalation in the country’s nuclear program, and posed a grave threat to international peace and security.
She noted that the DPRK had conducted an unprecedented number of missile tests in 2022, including the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States. The country had also resumed nuclear testing and was reportedly preparing to conduct a seventh nuclear test, she said.
Nakamitsu stressed that the DPRK’s nuclear program was a clear violation of Security Council resolutions and constituted a threat to regional and international peace and security. She called on the DPRK to comply fully with its obligations under Security Council resolutions and to engage in dialogue with the international community.
The Security Council has adopted a number of resolutions imposing sanctions on the DPRK in an effort to curb its nuclear and missile programs. However, these sanctions have not been effective in deterring the DPRK from continuing to develop its nuclear program.
In a statement to the Security Council, the United States urged the DPRK to abandon its nuclear and missile programs and to engage in dialogue with the United States and other members of the international community. The United States also called on the Security Council to take further action to enforce its sanctions against the DPRK.
The United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan also expressed concern about the DPRK’s nuclear program and called on the country to comply with Security Council resolutions.
Russia and China both called for a peaceful resolution to the issue and urged the DPRK to engage in dialogue with the international community.
The Security Council is expected to continue to discuss the DPRK’s nuclear program in the coming weeks and months.
