Federal Government Invests in Made-in-Canada Technologies to Advance Clean Fuels Sector

Ottawa, ON – The Government of Canada is investing $10 million in made-in-Canada technologies to advance the country’s clean fuels sector. The investment will support the development and demonstration of innovative technologies that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create jobs.

“Our government is committed to investing in made-in-Canada technologies that will help us meet our climate change goals,” said the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources. “This investment will support the development of new technologies that will help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and create jobs in the clean energy sector.”

The investment will be made through Natural Resources Canada’s Clean Fuels Fund, which supports projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. The projects that will be funded include:

  • $5 million to Enerkem Inc. (Montreal, QC): To develop and demonstrate a new technology that converts non-recyclable municipal solid waste into renewable biofuels and biochemicals.
  • $3 million to Renmatix Inc. (Vancouver, BC): To develop and demonstrate a new technology that converts plant biomass into cellulosic sugars that can be used to produce biofuels and other renewable products.
  • $2 million to Steeper Energy Inc. (Toronto, ON): To develop and demonstrate a new technology that converts waste heat from industrial processes into electricity.

These projects are expected to create over 100 jobs and help reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions by over 1 million tonnes per year.

“The Clean Fuels Fund is helping to make Canada a leader in the development and deployment of clean fuels technologies,” said Damien Lafortune, President and CEO of Enerkem. “We are grateful for the government’s support, which will allow us to continue to develop our innovative technology and bring it to market.”

The Government of Canada is committed to investing in clean energy technologies that will help us meet our climate change goals and create jobs. The Clean Fuels Fund is just one example of the government’s commitment to supporting the development of a clean energy economy in Canada.
