Federal Interior Minister Faeser visits contact point for the protection of municipal office holders and elected representatives

Berlin, 06.01.2025: Today, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser visited the contact point for the protection of municipal office holders and elected representatives at the German Association of Cities (DSTGB). The contact point is responsible for advising and supporting mayors, city councilors and other municipal office holders who are threatened or attacked because of their official activities.

In her speech, Faeser emphasized the importance of the work of the contact point: “Municipal office holders are the backbone of our democracy. They ensure that our cities and municipalities are livable and that our citizens feel safe. It is unacceptable that they are becoming increasingly the target of threats and attacks.”

The contact point was set up in 2021 in response to the increasing number of attacks on municipal office holders. In 2022, the contact point received over 1,000 inquiries from affected persons. The inquiries mainly concerned threats and insults, but also physical attacks.

Faeser announced that the federal government will provide additional funding for the contact point: “We want to strengthen the contact point so that it can continue to provide comprehensive support to those affected. We will not tolerate that municipal office holders are intimidated or harmed because of their work.”

DSTGB President Markus Lewe welcomed the visit of the Federal Interior Minister: “The contact point is an important institution for the protection of municipal office holders. We are grateful to the Federal Interior Ministry for its support. The additional funding will enable us to expand our services and provide even better support to those affected.”

The contact point for the protection of municipal office holders and elected representatives is a joint project of the DSTGB, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB) and the German Association of Rural Districts (DVG). The contact point is staffed by experienced lawyers and psychologists who provide advice and support to those affected.
