Message from the Minister of Health – Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month
January 6, 2025
Today, on the first day of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, I am taking this opportunity to recognize the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our communities. Firefighters face unique risks in their line of work, including exposure to hazardous materials that can lead to cancer.
Cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters. In Canada, firefighters are more likely to be diagnosed with certain types of cancer, such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer.
The Government of Canada is committed to protecting the health and safety of our firefighters. That is why we are investing in research to better understand the risks that firefighters face and develop strategies to reduce their exposure to hazardous materials. We are also working with provinces and territories to improve access to cancer screening and treatment for firefighters.
This month, I encourage all Canadians to show their support for our firefighters. You can do this by learning more about the risks they face, donating to organizations that support firefighter health, or simply by saying thank you to a firefighter you know.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of our firefighters for their dedication and bravery. You make our communities safer, and we are committed to protecting your health.
