Christmas saw anticipated rise in flu, latest UKHSA data shows
The expected rise in flu cases over the Christmas period has been confirmed by the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
The data shows that the number of people testing positive for flu increased in the week leading up to Christmas, and remained high over the festive period. This is in line with what was expected, as flu typically peaks in January and February.
The UKHSA is urging people to get vaccinated against flu if they have not already done so. The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself against the virus and reduce the risk of serious illness.
Dr Conall Watson, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, said:
“We have seen the expected rise in flu cases over the Christmas period, but it is important to remember that flu is still circulating and can cause serious illness.
“The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself against the virus and reduce the risk of serious illness. If you have not yet been vaccinated, I urge you to do so now.”
The flu vaccine is available free of charge to people who are at risk of developing serious complications from flu, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, and people with underlying health conditions.
The vaccine is also available to frontline health and social care workers.
People can get the flu vaccine from their GP, pharmacy, or other healthcare provider.
More information about the flu vaccine is available on the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu/
