UN health agency launches $56.4 million appeal to meet critical needs in Syria
December 24, 2024
Geneva – The United Nations health agency on Thursday launched a $56.4 million appeal to meet the critical health needs of the Syrian people in 2025.
The UN agency said the funds would be used to provide essential health services, including primary health care, maternal and child health care, nutrition services, and support for people with disabilities.
The agency said the health system in Syria had been severely damaged by the ongoing conflict, and that millions of people were in need of health care.
“The health system in Syria is in ruins,” said the agency’s regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari. “Millions of people are in need of health care, and we are doing everything we can to meet their needs.”
The agency said the $56.4 million would be used to provide a range of health services, including:
- Primary health care services, such as vaccinations, antenatal care, and treatment for common diseases
- Maternal and child health care services, such as safe childbirth, newborn care, and immunization
- Nutrition services, such as providing food supplements for malnourished children and pregnant women
- Support for people with disabilities, such as providing prosthetics and rehabilitation services
The agency said the appeal was part of the UN’s $4.2 billion humanitarian appeal for Syria in 2025.
