The UK Government has announced today that it is providing £3.5 million to restore and save six historic Welsh treasures.
The funding will be used to repair and conserve buildings, monuments and artefacts that are at risk of being lost or damaged.
The six projects that will receive funding are:
- Caernarfon Castle: £1 million to repair the castle’s walls and towers.
- Conwy Castle: £500,000 to restore the castle’s moat and drawbridge.
- Harlech Castle: £500,000 to repair the castle’s keep and gatehouse.
- Powis Castle: £500,000 to restore the castle’s gardens and terraces.
- St David’s Cathedral: £500,000 to repair the cathedral’s roof and windows.
- Llanthony Priory: £500,000 to restore the priory’s church and cloisters.
The UK Government’s funding will be used to match funding from other sources, such as the National Lottery Heritage Fund and local authorities.
The six projects are expected to be completed by 2027.
Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan said: “Our historic environment is a vital part of our national identity and heritage. This funding will help to protect and preserve these iconic Welsh treasures for future generations.”
Welsh Secretary David TC Davies said: “These six projects will make a real difference to the preservation of some of Wales’ most important historic sites. I am delighted that the UK Government is able to provide this funding.”
