- The Honourable Rosalie Abella, a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, has been appointed Judge of the Tax Court of Canada as of December 19, 2024.
Biography
Rosalie Abella was born in Toronto, Ontario. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in 1967 and an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1970.
Justice Abella was a law professor at Osgoode Hall Law School from 1974 to 1984. She also served as the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment from 1983 to 1984 and as the chair of the Ontario Law Reform Commission from 1984 to 1989.
Justice Abella was appointed to the bench of the Ontario Court of Justice (General Division) in 1989 and was promoted to the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1992. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004.
Justice Abella is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, and the Governor General’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Canadian Law. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the International Academy of Comparative Law.
