Ottawa, December 19, 2024 – The Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following judicial appointment, effective December 23, 2024:
The Honourable Ian Binnie to the Federal Court.
Mr. Justice Binnie has been appointed for a term of eight years.
Prior to the appointment, Binnie was a senior counsel at the law firm of Ogilvy Renault in Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1980 and was named a Queen’s Counsel in 1991.
Binnie has a long history of involvement in the legal profession. He is a past president of the Advocates’ Society, a former member of the Council of the Canadian Bar Association, and a former chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section.
Binnie has also been a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Special Committee on Civil Procedure and the Ontario Civil Rules Committee. He is the author of several articles on civil procedure and has lectured extensively on the topic.
Binnie is also a recipient of the Law Society Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
