Ottawa, December 19, 2024 – The Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following judicial appointment:

The Honourable Deborah M. Paquette has been appointed a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Trial Division, in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. She replaces Madam Justice J.M. Hogan, who was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Newfoundland and Labrador in July 2024.

Biography

Madam Justice Deborah M. Paquette has been a partner at Keating & Paquette in St. John’s since 2004. Prior to that, she practised with Tuzo, Hunter, Carruthers and Gillis, and with Costello, Martins, O’Dea, Breen. She was also a lawyer with the Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Justice Paquette has appeared at all levels of court in Newfoundland and Labrador, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Her practice areas include commercial litigation, class actions, constitutional law, criminal law, dispute resolution, family law, human rights law, insurance law, labour and employment law, personal injury law, professional negligence, products liability, real estate law, and tax law.

Justice Paquette is an active member of the legal community. She has taught as a lecturer in law at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador and presented at continuing legal education conferences for both lawyers and law students. She has also volunteered her time to the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Canadian Bar Association.

Justice Paquette is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Master of Laws (LL.M.). She is a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Canadian Bar Association.
