Canada to Establish Caribbean Future Skills Fund
December 19, 2024
Ottawa, ON – The Government of Canada announced today the establishment of the Caribbean Future Skills Fund, a $20 million initiative to support skills development and employment opportunities in the Caribbean.
The fund will provide funding for projects that strengthen the skills of Caribbean youth and adults, and support the development of innovative approaches to skills training and employment creation.
“Canada and the Caribbean have a long history of cooperation and friendship,” said the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development. “The Caribbean Future Skills Fund will help to build on this partnership by investing in the skills and potential of the Caribbean people.”
The fund will focus on supporting projects in the following areas:
- Skills development: Providing training and certification programs for youth and adults in high-demand sectors, such as tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy.
- Entrepreneurship and innovation: Supporting the development of small businesses and start-ups, and providing training in entrepreneurship and innovation skills.
- Labor market information and job matching: Improving access to labor market information and providing support for job matching and placement services.
The fund will be administered by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and will support projects implemented by Canadian and Caribbean organizations.
“The Caribbean Future Skills Fund will make a significant contribution to the development of the Caribbean region,” said the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs. “By investing in skills development and employment opportunities, we are helping to build a more prosperous and sustainable future for the people of the Caribbean.”
The announcement of the Caribbean Future Skills Fund was welcomed by Caribbean leaders.
“This is a very timely and important initiative,” said the Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. “The Caribbean Future Skills Fund will help us to address the skills gap in our region and create new opportunities for our people.”
The Caribbean Future Skills Fund is part of Canada’s broader commitment to supporting skills development and employment creation in the Caribbean. Canada provides technical assistance and financial support to a range of skills development programs in the region, and works with Caribbean governments to strengthen their education and training systems.
