David Smith, 59, of Lowfields, Belchford, and Neil Chapman, 44, of Fairfield Crescent, Alford, were sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday, December 16.
They were each given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
They were also ordered to pay costs of £2,000 each.
The court heard that between January 2015 and November 2018, Smith and Chapman operated an illegal waste site at Moor Farm, Belchford.
The site was used to store and process large quantities of waste, including hazardous waste, without the necessary permits.
The Environment Agency investigated the site and found that it was causing a significant risk to the environment and human health.
The court heard that the site had caused pollution to the air, water and land, and had also created a nuisance for local residents.
In addition to the prison sentences and community orders, Smith and Chapman were also banned from being involved in the waste industry for five years.
Speaking after the sentencing, Environment Agency officer Matt Shardlow said: “This was a serious case of illegal waste activity that caused significant harm to the environment and local community.
“The sentences handed down by the court reflect the seriousness of the offences and send a clear message that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.”
He added: “We will continue to work with our partners to tackle illegal waste activity and protect the environment and human health.”
