Ofsted publishes Big Listen action monitoring report and announces trials of new inspection approach
Today, Ofsted is publishing an action monitoring report that shows it is making progress on the commitments it made in response to The Big Listen.
Ofsted’s Big Listen was a public consultation exercise that ran from April to June 2023. It sought views from parents, carers, early years settings, schools, colleges, children’s social care providers and young people on the impact of the education inspection framework.
The action monitoring report, published today, sets out what progress Ofsted has made on the commitments it made in its response to the consultation.
Ofsted has already taken steps to reduce the burden of inspections by reducing the number of routine inspections and introducing a more risk-based approach. It has also made changes to the way it inspects schools, colleges and early years settings to make inspections more proportionate and less intrusive.
In addition, Ofsted has introduced a new ‘quality of education’ judgement that better reflects the overall quality of education that children and young people are receiving.
Today, Ofsted is also announcing that it will be trialling a new inspection approach in a small number of schools and colleges. The new approach will focus on evaluating the quality of education that children and young people are receiving, rather than just the results they are achieving.
Ofsted’s Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman, said:
“I am pleased to be able to report that we are making good progress on the commitments we made in response to The Big Listen. We have already taken steps to reduce the burden of inspections, make them more proportionate and less intrusive, and introduce a new ‘quality of education’ judgement.
“Today, we are also announcing that we will be trialling a new inspection approach in a small number of schools and colleges. This new approach will focus on evaluating the quality of education that children and young people are receiving, rather than just the results they are achieving.
“We will be working closely with the schools and colleges involved in the trial to evaluate the new approach and make any necessary changes before rolling it out more widely.”
The action monitoring report and the announcement of the new inspection approach trials are part of Ofsted’s ongoing commitment to improve the quality of education and care for children and young people.
