Remarks by President Biden at a Hanukkah Holiday Reception

The White House December 17, 2024 04:28 PM EST

THE PRESIDENT: Happy Hanukkah! (Applause.) Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you, Rabbi Brashevitsky, for your blessing and for leading this special celebration. And to you and your wife, Gail, thank you once again for the honor of hosting us in this magnificent home. Look at this home. Look at this house. It’s beautiful. (Applause.)

The First Lady and I want to wish each and every one of you a blessed, joyous, very happy Hanukkah. This is a very, very special time of year for the Jewish people, the Festival of Lights. And as Jewish families around the world light the menorah each night, Hanukkah reminds us of a very old and very powerful truth: that even in the darkest of times, light will always prevail over darkness. (Applause.)

This is a message that resonates deeply with the American people, because it’s a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope. It’s a message of hope. It’s a message of hope. And it’s a message that we need to hear now more than ever.

As we gather here tonight, the world is facing a number of challenges. We’re still in the midst of a global pandemic. We’re seeing a rise in anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred and violence. And we’re witnessing the horrors of war in Ukraine.

But even in the face of these challenges, we must not lose sight of the light. We must not lose sight of hope.

Hanukkah reminds us that even in the darkest of times, light will always prevail over darkness. It reminds us that even when we feel lost or alone, we are never truly alone. And it reminds us that we must never give up on the fight for what is right.

And that’s why I’m so grateful for this gathering tonight. Because you all are a testament to the power of hope and the importance of community. You are a shining example of what we can achieve when we work together.

I want to thank Rabbi Brashevitsky, his wife, Gail, all the rabbis who are here tonight, the faith leaders who are here tonight, my colleagues in the Senate and House, the members of my Cabinet, the staff that works so hard to make this Hanukkah event so special, and all of you for being here tonight. (Applause.)

I also want to take a moment to recognize the bravery of the Ukrainian people. (Applause.) They are fighting for their freedom, for their democracy, and for their very way of life. And we stand with them.

And as we light the menorah tonight, let us remember the story of Hanukkah. Let us remember the bravery of the Maccabees. Let us remember that even in the darkest of times, light will always prevail over darkness.

Thank you all. May you have a happy and healthy Hanukkah. May you and your families be blessed with happiness and peace. And may we all continue to work together to build a more just and equitable future for all.

Mo’adim l’simcha. (Applause.)
