WFP delivers aid to over 800,000 in Sudan
KHARTOUM, Sudan – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered food assistance to over 800,000 people in Sudan in recent weeks, providing vital support to vulnerable families facing hunger and malnutrition.
The assistance, which included wheat flour, sorghum, lentils, vegetable oil, and fortified blended food, was distributed to families in need across 13 states in Sudan. The distributions were part of WFP’s ongoing emergency response to the country’s deepening humanitarian crisis, which has been exacerbated by conflict, economic instability, and climate shocks.
“The situation in Sudan is dire, with millions of people struggling to meet their basic needs,” said Babagana Ahmadu, WFP’s Representative and Country Director in Sudan. “This food assistance is a lifeline for vulnerable families, helping them to stay afloat during this difficult time.”
Among those who received food assistance was Amina, a mother of five living in the war-torn region of Darfur. “We have been struggling to find food for months,” she said. “This food from WFP will make a huge difference for my family.”
WFP is scaling up its operations in Sudan to reach more people in need. The agency plans to provide food assistance to over 10 million people in 2024, including those affected by conflict, displacement, and natural disasters.
“We are committed to staying and delivering for the people of Sudan,” said Ahmadu. “We will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure that those in need receive the food assistance they need to survive and thrive.”
WFP’s operations in Sudan are funded by generous contributions from donors around the world. The agency is grateful for the support of its partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the Government of Sudan.
