UN envoy calls for increased aid for Syria in Damascus visit
15 December 2024
UNITED NATIONS, Dec 15 (Xinhua) — The United Nations humanitarian chief on Thursday called for increased aid for Syria during a visit to Damascus, the capital of the war-torn country.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said in a statement that he had met with Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous and Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad to discuss the humanitarian situation in the country.
Griffiths said he had underlined the need for “predictable, sustained and flexible” funding to meet the needs of people in Syria.
“We need increased support from all donors to help the people of Syria,” he said. “The humanitarian crisis in Syria is not over.”
The UN has been providing humanitarian assistance to Syria since the conflict began in 2011. The UN estimates that more than 13 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 6 million people who are internally displaced.
The UN has warned that the humanitarian situation in Syria is deteriorating due to a number of factors, including the ongoing conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the economic crisis in the country.
In his statement, Griffiths said that he had also discussed with Syrian officials the need to improve access to humanitarian aid for people in need.
“We need to be able to reach all people in need, wherever they are,” he said. “We need to ensure that aid is delivered in a timely and efficient manner.”
Griffiths said he was encouraged by the discussions he had with Syrian officials.
“I am hopeful that we can work together to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria,” he said. “We need to do everything we can to help the people of Syria.”
