Press Release: Federal Police Air Squadron Gifhorn Becomes Independent Location
Gifhorn, 13.12.2024 – The Federal Police Air Squadron Gifhorn will become an independent location within the Federal Police Aviation Group St. Augustin on 1 January 2025. This was announced today by Federal Police President Dieter Romann and Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Boris Pistorius.
“The establishment of the Air Squadron Gifhorn as an independent location is a logical step in the further development of our air support for the Federal Police,” said Romann. “With its close proximity to the Middle German metropolitan region, the Gifhorn location offers ideal conditions for the nationwide operation of our helicopters.”
The Air Squadron Gifhorn currently has 12 helicopters of the type Airbus H145 and a staff of around 120 employees. The unit is responsible for air support for police operations in the northern and central regions of Germany. In addition, the squadron provides air rescue services and is involved in disaster relief operations.
“The establishment of the Air Squadron Gifhorn as an independent location will significantly strengthen the police presence in the region,” said Pistorius. “The fast and flexible deployment of the helicopters will contribute to the safety and security of the citizens of Lower Saxony and beyond.”
The Federal Police Aviation Group St. Augustin is responsible for the operation of the Federal Police’s helicopter fleet. The group has a total of four air squadrons located in St. Augustin, Fuldatal, Oberschleißheim, and Gifhorn.
