Humber defences project reaches new milestone
The Environment Agency has continued to connect its new state-of-the-art flood defence barriers to the Environment Agency’s Leeds office, which will monitor the new defences when they are operational in 2024.
These new barriers, which are part of the £100 million Humber flood defence scheme, are designed to reduce the risk of flooding to 3,900 homes and 250 businesses in Hull and East Riding.
They will also better protect iconic sites such as Hull Minster, The Deep and the KCOM Stadium.
The Humber defences project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. The barriers are designed to protect the city of Hull from flooding from the River Hull and the River Humber.
The project also included extensive work on the surrounding embankments, upgrading of two pumping stations and the installation of giant pumps capable of pumping the volume of 15 Olympic swimming pools per minute.
The project is part of the government’s £5.2 billion investment in flood defences in England. This investment will better protect 330,000 properties and help to create 2,300 jobs.
Environment Minister Steve Double said:
“This is a major milestone for the Humber flood defence scheme, which will better protect thousands of homes and businesses in Hull and the East Riding from flooding.
“The project will also create jobs and boost the local economy.
“This investment is part of the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and protecting our communities from the impacts of climate change.”
The Humber defences project is expected to be completed in 2024.
