Tokyo – Today, the Governments of Japan and the United States held the 15th Japan – U.S. CBRN Defense Policy Dialogue in Tokyo. The delegations were led by:
- Mr. KAWASHIMA Atsushi, Director-General for International Cooperation, Ministry of Defense, Japan
- Ms. Sharon Burke, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Chemical and Biological Defense Programs, U.S. Department of Defense
The two sides reaffirmed the importance of Japan and U.S. collaboration in the area of countering chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, and recognized the growing significance of CBRN defense cooperation in the current strategic environment.
During the dialogue, the delegations discussed a wide range of issues related to CBRN defense, including:
- Strengthening bilateral cooperation in CBRN defense research and development
- Enhancing joint exercises and training
- Promoting information sharing and early warning
- Expanding cooperation in capacity building and assistance to third countries
The delegations also exchanged views on emerging CBRN threats, such as the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for CBRN attacks, and discussed measures to mitigate these threats.
The two sides agreed to continue to work closely together to strengthen their CBRN defense capabilities and to enhance regional and global security. The next Japan – U.S. CBRN Defense Policy Dialogue will be held in Washington, D.C. in 2025.
