SACKVILLE, N.B. — A new $3.5-million expansion at a New Brunswick agri-food and beverage testing laboratory will give Atlantic Canada’s food, beverage and natural health product processors access to expanded testing capabilities.

The expansion of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Atlantic Food and Beverage Centre (AFBC) in Sackville, N.B., is to include new equipment for microbiological and chemical testing, as well as space for research and development, and training programs.

The investment builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership to support Canadian businesses with testing, research and development.

The AFBC is a recognized leader in food and beverage testing and research and development in Canada. It provides a wide range of testing services to food, beverage and natural health product processors, including microbiological, chemical, nutritional and sensory testing.

The expansion of the AFBC will allow the laboratory to offer new testing services, such as pathogen detection, shelf-life testing and packaging evaluation. It will also provide space for research and development projects, such as the development of new food products and processes.

The expansion of the AFBC is expected to create new jobs and help to grow the agri-food and beverage sector in Atlantic Canada.

“This investment will help to ensure that Atlantic Canada’s food, beverage and natural health product processors have access to the testing and research and development services they need to succeed,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “Our government is committed to supporting the growth of the agri-food and beverage sector in Atlantic Canada.”

“The expansion of the AFBC is great news for the agri-food and beverage sector in Atlantic Canada,” said the Honourable Blaine Higgs, Premier of New Brunswick. “This investment will help to create jobs, grow the economy and support the development of new and innovative food products.”

“The AFBC is a valuable asset to the agri-food and beverage sector in Atlantic Canada,” said Jo-Ann Campbell, President of the Atlantic Canada Food Processors Association. “This investment will help to ensure that the AFBC continues to provide the testing and research and development services that our members need to succeed.”
