Human Toll of Senseless Conflict ‘Is Incalculable’, Says Türk

2024-12-09 12:00

GENEVA (9 December 2024) – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for an end to the senseless conflict that continues to ravage many parts of the world, warning that the human toll is “incalculable.”

“The suffering inflicted on innocent civilians is simply unacceptable,” Türk said. “Women, children, and the elderly are bearing the brunt of this violence, and their lives are being torn apart. Homes have been destroyed, families have been separated, and futures have been shattered.”

Türk urged all parties to the conflict to lay down their weapons and work towards a peaceful resolution.

“There can be no military solution to this conflict,” he said. “The only way to end the bloodshed and bring lasting peace is through dialogue and negotiation.”

Türk also called on the international community to do more to support peace efforts and to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations.

“The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this senseless conflict,” he said. “We must all work together to bring about an end to the violence and to rebuild the lives of those who have been affected.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is the world’s leading voice on human rights. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) monitors human rights situations around the world and provides support to victims of human rights violations.
