Remarks by Vice President Harris at a Tribal Nations Summit
Location: South Court Auditorium Eisenhower Executive Office Building Date: December 9, 2024 Time: 21:47 EST
Vice President Harris: Good evening.
To all of the Tribal leaders, to the members of Congress who are here, to all of the distinguished guests: It is an honor to be here with you tonight.
I want to start by acknowledging that we are gathered on the traditional land of the Piscataway people. We are grateful for their stewardship of this land.
I also want to acknowledge the leadership of President Biden. He has made it a priority to build a stronger, more just relationship with Tribal Nations. And I am proud to stand with him in that work.
Tonight, I want to talk about the progress we have made together, and the challenges that still lie ahead.
Progress
In the past two years, we have made significant progress in strengthening our relationship with Tribal Nations.
We have increased funding for Tribal programs. We have invested in Tribal infrastructure. And we have worked to improve access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for Native Americans.
We have also made progress on issues that are important to Tribal Nations, such as climate change, missing and murdered Indigenous women, and the opioid crisis.
I am proud of the work that we have done together. But I know that there is still more to be done.
Challenges
We still face significant challenges in our relationship with Tribal Nations.
Native Americans continue to experience poverty, unemployment, and health disparities at rates that are higher than any other group in our country.
And we still have work to do to address the legacy of colonialism and racism that has harmed Native American communities for centuries.
Call to Action
I believe that we have a responsibility to work together to overcome these challenges.
We need to continue to invest in Tribal programs and infrastructure. We need to improve access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for Native Americans.
And we need to address the legacy of colonialism and racism that has harmed Native American communities for centuries.
I am confident that we can meet these challenges. But we can only do it if we work together.
Conclusion
I want to thank you for your leadership. I want to thank you for your commitment to building a stronger, more just relationship between the United States and Tribal Nations.
I look forward to continuing to work with you to build a better future for all Native Americans.
Thank you.
