Washington, D.C. – President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. today declared a major disaster exists in the State of West Virginia and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides beginning on June 23, 2024.
The President’s action makes Federal funding available to affected individuals and households in the counties of Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming.
Federal funding is also available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides in the designated areas.
Federal funding is available to the State of West Virginia under FEMA’s Public Assistance program for emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged public facilities. Federal funding is also available under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to state and local governments as well as certain private nonprofit organizations for certain projects that will reduce the risk of future damage from natural hazards.
Pete Gaynor, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named James H. Joseph as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected areas. Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
FEMA said that disaster recovery assistance may include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides.
Applicants can begin applying for assistance by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
