Statement with regard to last week’s event ‘Wars and Prospects for Building the New State in Sudan: Challenges and Opportunities’
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has received several queries with regard to Dutch involvement of last week’s event entitled ‘Wars and Prospects for Building the New State in Sudan: Challenges and Opportunities’. The event that was held in Khartoum, took place December 2-3, 2024. The event was attended by representatives of the Sudanese government, political parties, civil society organizations, and international partners.
The Netherlands did not participate in the organisation of this conference nor did we financially contribute to it. However, the Dutch Ambassador to Sudan did attend the opening session and delivered a speech. In his speech he called for an inclusive dialogue between all stakeholders in Sudan, including the armed opposition groups. He also stressed the importance of respecting human rights and the rule of law.
The Dutch government is committed to supporting the Sudanese people in their quest for a democratic and peaceful future. We believe that an inclusive dialogue is essential to achieving this goal. We urge all stakeholders in Sudan to engage in this dialogue in good faith and without preconditions.
We are also concerned about the recent reports of violence in Sudan and call on all parties to exercise restraint and to respect the right to peaceful protest.
The Netherlands stands ready to support the Sudanese people in their efforts to build a democratic and peaceful future. We will continue to work with our international partners to support the Sudanese people in this endeavor.
